Work Experience |
Network Systems Architect Summer 2000 Rice County Sheriff's Department Rice County, MN
I designed a layout for and implemented a Local Area Network and telephone system for the Rice County Emergency Communications Command Center. This is a mobile 30-foot trailer that is wired for both voice and data, and contains computer, phone, and radio communication systems that Police, Fire, and the Sheriff's Department will use during emergencies and special events. The trailer was designed with emphasis given on fault-tolerance of the communications systems. Industry standard connectors and cables were used during the implementation and design phases of the project. Extra equipment and cable runs are available to attach the trailer to another building's data and phone systems, to provide Internet access and four lines of telephone service to personnel inside the command center.

| Current and Past Projects |
I have a few projects that I am working on in my spare time. Usually these projects are focused on futuristic technology or special-interest.
Home Automation Contributing Programmer to the MisterHouse Open-Source Home Automation software package. Wrote code to track remote GPS units with wireless MODEMs (TNCs), in order to find the position of moving vehicles. The software also provides the ability to remotely control the house (i.e., remotely turn on an Air Conditioner from another house or vehicle, etc.) For more information, visit http://kliers.net/index.php/projects/69-mhats
MailTalk Voice-based E-Mail Client Wrote a homebrew E-Mail Client for 386 and above computers with a SoundBlaster card and MODEM, that allows visually-impaired people to have their incoming E-Mail read to them through a text-to-speech interface. Many pieces of software available are difficult to use without aid of a person with sight. The focus of this software was to provide an easy-to-use interface to let individuals with little or no sight to communicate with friends and family on the Internet. Rice County Amateur Radio Emergency Response Team (A.R.E.R.T.) The A.R.E.R.T. contains a group of Amateur Radio operators that helps local law enforcement (police and fire) with communications during emergencies. Members of A.R.E.R.T. have solid knowledge of the importance of command infrastructure and the role everyone plays in an emergency situation. I volunteer my communications skills and equipment for community events like the Tree Frog Music Festival.
Rice County Emergency Services Storm Spotting and advanced warning for Rice County, specifically through the Skywarn program. I assist with dispatch of storm spotters, running net control during storm emergencies, as well as field spotting myself.
